Beyond having a general knowledge of what is and isn't safe to do on your home environment, these three get by just fine. Strictly speaking of at home use, I get by with a combination of the free version of Malware Bytes (though I do recommend the paid version as well), VirusTotal and just the built-in Windows Defender. Every day was finding another script kiddie exploit tool to dissect. That kind of jump started trouble shooting and remote help skills. I ended up sticking around after cleaning up my machine and learned bout VX and helped out for a few years. I got dragged into an AV help chat ran by an IRCOP on Undernet and discovered a whole world of VX - viruses/trojans/exploits. I got messaged by someone on IRC when I joined a chat, they had portscanned the computer and found the service running. The last time I suffered any intrusion/data loss was in the late 90's and that was caused by my sister installing backoriface on the family computer at the command of a miscreant from IRC. Now that I think of it, I have at least 3 more old laptops with some flavor of linux on them around the house. I still haven't bothered fixing windows, I just keep playing Factorio under Xubuntu. I ended up booting to Xubuntu and continuing the show. #Bitdefender free download is tagged by virustotal install#o.O Heck there's an install of windows 10 on that laptop and it failed to boot when I was at a convention earlier this month when yanked out my laptop to use as a display source for the projector. My personal fleet of 7 windows machines have much lower screen time than my Xubuntu install on my ancient HP EliteBook 8720 from 2012. Second, Windows Defender and decent administrative habits.
